We’re thrilled to announce today that Glean is partnering with Databricks to enable everyday users to discover and analyze tabular information with natural language, thanks to Databricks AI/BI Genie's advanced capabilities of processing structured data. This upcoming integration will enable end-to-end workflows involving complex datasets directly within Glean Assistant.

Grounded in Glean’s understanding of enterprise data and permissioning rules, all responses follow user permissions set within Databricks’ Unity Catalog. This ensures anyone can securely and efficiently query data without having to tap additional resources or team members for assistance, such as analysts and engineers.

"Databricks AI/BI provides a new paradigm for connecting business users with data and analytics," said Adam Conway, SVP of Products at Databricks. "We are excited to partner with Glean to enable data presented in Genie to be discovered and analyzed directly in Glean, allowing users to take advantage of AI to explore the full breadth of enterprise data."

No-hassle data discovery and analysis

Let’s walk through a quick example displaying how an everyday Glean user will be able to make the most of this new integration with Genie. For example, marketers can use this new integration to understand complex structured data without the help of engineers, analysts, or data scientists.

In this example, a marketing manager wants to identify which subscribers are churning in order to better target her promotional offers. The information she needs is distributed across multiple applications, including a MySQL database, Excel spreadsheets, and Powerpoint presentations. Normally, she would have to contact various team members for help. With Genie and Glean, she can complete the entire workflow herself in a matter of minutes. She starts by asking Glean, “What states and age groups have the highest churn rate on our website in 2024?”

Glean understands that Sarah is asking a question that can be answered by Genie, and invokes it to pull churn data relevant to the prompt. Based on the results, she finds that 18-24 year olds and 25-40 year olds in the US Pacific region are churning the most. Now she wants to understand why, and asks, “What are the top reasons that 18-40 year olds in the US Pacific provided for canceling their subscription?”

This enables her to confirm that pricing is the top reason for subscriber churn. However, she wants to further understand the competitive landscape to better calibrate her promotional offer. She asks Glean, “Show me the monthly subscription prices for our top competitors in California, ranked by market share.” Glean provides the price details, sourced from an Excel spreadsheet that the research team regularly updates.

Finally, Sarah checks Glean to see if the marketing team has previously sent any promotional emails to the younger demographics in the Pacific region. Glean points her to a similar initiative that was successful in September 2023, sourced from a campaign powerpoint. Now provided with all the right information, Sarah gets about to building her promotional campaign. If she’s interested in digging deeper on her own later, she can click on the link to the Genie Space to perform more advanced queries.
